Words to Live By

I was asked by our President to give the closing quote this month and wanted to share one of my favorites here on this site.  When I was fourteen my father had me memorize these words by Calvin Coolidge and told me if I lived my life in this manner that there was nothing I could not accomplish.  He brought it to me because when I was a sophomore in High School I quit the football team because I was 5’10” and weight close to 240 lbs.  I was so out of shape and embarrassed.

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan “press on” has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race” Calvin Coolidge.

I joined the wrestling team that winter and worked so hard and by the following football season I was 170 lbs!  It was amazing, and I accomplished that feat by pure determination and nothing else.

I have applied these same principles to my BNI career and now my Realtor Career, and it has not let me down.  I don’t want people to think it is just about working hard, but about working hard and smart.  You will make mistakes, but it is the courage to learn from those failures to allow you to try again.

Stay tuned for the next post.

Tom, I really like this quote. I have it written down in my office and I have also shared this with my sixteen year old son. He is a great kid with a lot on his plate with school, after school sports, scouts, learning to drive, keeping up his grades, etc. Sometimes he gets discouraged and overwhelmed. We talked about the value of persistence and how that will help him to achieve his goals of keeping his grades up, improving his 2K time in rowing, moving forward with his Eagle Scout project, getting his license, etc. The list goes on. Sometimes he feels that he needs to be “special” or “better” in some way than he feels he is in order to achieve what he wants. But really what he (and all of us) needs to do is “press on” and not give up. Thanks for helping me to help him see that.

  2. Tom- These sentiments are so true. I have always been a great believer in the sheer power of effort and perseverance. Thank you for the great example and reminder!
